Sun Sep 1st Grannies finish 55 runs short

Match report

A bright sunny autumn day dawned for this annual 'local derby' for the Grannies captain. Having provided golf at Rye and a slap-up barbecue lunch for his team, as the best means of getting them to the ground on time, his hopes were high. Putting the opposition in to bat first, realising that his batsman-loaded team was bound to prosper in the run chase, prospects looked good as the home team struggled to 84 in 20 overs in the face of excellent opening spells from James Hamblin (ex Hampshire), Mike Bellhouse (ex Middlesex), Tom Waite (ex) and Nick Burdge (ex ex). Finding the required 5th bowler to keep things tight proved a bit of a problem and the scoring rate began to increase proportionally. Stone's ultimate total of 251 was probably about par on this fast scoring ground.
The Grannies got off to a brisk start with an opening partnership of 91 in 16 overs from Imraan Arbee (46) and Nick Burdge (42). Persistent and accurate bowling however then induced a bit of a slide in the middle order, and before long we were reduced to 142-6. A mini revival then occurred, with John Newton hitting a spirited 29 and Harry Bengough 20, but in the end 251 proved a step too far, as the Grannies subsided to 196 all out.
REAL Grannies present: Newton (Jenny), Percival (Pat) and unique great-granny Percival (Judy).
