Result - Wiltshire Queries

Sun Aug 18th Grannies C.C. lost by 80 runs

Match report

On a humid morning with a green covering on the pitch, the skipper elected to insert the Queeries, who immediately showed the error of that decision by racing to 156-3 off 25 overs at lunch. The wicket played true but slow; anything short was too easy and the Grannies struggled to find their length early on.
The Queries Tom Shaw reached his 2,000th run of the season and went on to make a breezy 138, top scoring by over 100 runs.

Indeed, after lunch, the Grannies had a very good session, dismissing the Queeries for 238 with Adam Newton and Mike Fernie offering good control and threatening deliveries, taking two and three wickets respectively.

With around 45 overs to make the runs there was optimism in the changing room, with a sense that a couple of good innings would see us home. Unfortunately the Grannies could only muster one, with James Brierley scoring an impressive 83 before visibly tiring, probably of his partners lack of application!

One notable exception was Robin Rogers who, despite a damaged hamstring, took a runner out with him and formed a strong partnership with James, scoring 26 not out.

So to the inevitable Grannies last stand; a moustachioed Fernie, like a modern day Custer, redoubtably fending off the Queeries impressive Fyfe all the way to the last over and an unlikely draw. But, in all fairness, justice was done with 4 balls remaining when Fyfe induced the catch to end with a five-for and a Queeries win.

Many thanks to the Queeries for what is always a hugely enjoyable day and a superb lunch and tea.
