Result - Liphook & Ripsley

Sun Aug 11th Grannies short by 10 runs

Match report

Having conquered the perils of Liphook centre being closed and requiring a diversion of about 10 miles we started with Liphook batting first. They got off to a quick start followed by some early wickets. tight bowling by Staniforth and Richards kept the score down and then Michael Fernie came on to bowl and took 5 wickets with the help of some fine catches not least from Rob Cranston who held 3 including two steepling catches at long on. Martin Stringer who had driven from Norfolk bowled with aggression and was unlucky not to take wickets. We looked like we would keep them down to about 210 but the Liphook skipper had other ideas and set about us scoring 50 in four overs! they ended with 245.

We replied with Simon Baldey and Billy Maisey scoring quite quickly before Billy was bowled. Jamie Richards then came to the crease and he and Simon put on a good stand of about 60 before Simon was caught trying to go over the top for 38. Gwilym Thomas came to the crease and he and Jamie continued to put on the runs and at that stage we were going along at a reasonable rate. Jamie was then caught at the wicket having made 58. Gwilym continued to hit runs, including several sixes, supported by Rob Cranston, but we were getting behind the run rate. With six overs to go Gwilym was LBW for 62 and we needed about 60 to win. Runs were accumulated as wickets fell trying to chase down the score which left us with one over to go needing 18 runs and although Rob (43*)hit a superb reverse sweep for four we ended up 10 short.

A great game, good weather and superb tea.
