Match report

At his own request this match report must start with the fulsome apology of the Demijohns captain who admitted to having "got it wrong" with his declaration and consequently killing this match as a contest by 3:30pm.

The Demijohns were once again able to call on the First Class experience of two current Oxbridge Blues, one each of the lighter and the darker, who proceeded to put on roughly 180 for the first wicket. The only crumb of comfort for this Dark Blue scribe was that the Oxford man outscored the Cambridge man. However he outscored him by roughly 120. And the Cambridge man made 80!

Eventually having scored his second double ton in two weeks, in both cases not against the First Class bowling attacks he ought to be facing, the Dark Blue retired to the pavilion leaving 11 rather hot and bothered Grannies who between them had dropped him 3 times - albeit on no occasion for less than 130. However at this point, with the score at roughly 330, the Demijohns decided to bat on, eventually declaring at tea on 352-2 with one retirement.

Those 2 wickets were bagged by H Yeates and P Schutzer-Weissman - surely the most exotically named (and tanned) player ever to play for the Grannies as opposed to ski for Switzerland!

Some crumbs of comfort were consumed with a hearty tea before the Grannies set about ..., well set about what exactly? We batted but the game was only ever going to be a draw or a loss so on the whole people set about enjoying themselves rather than worrying about the match situation. The Demijohns also started with 3 boundary riders from the very first over to underline their approach.

Most people got going on a pitch that continued to play well and fine contributions were made by T Sykes, H Llewellyn, N Yeates (who gave the Dark Blue a bit of his own medicine) and P Schutz... well you know who I mean. The Grannies ended on approx 265-9.

So sadly a rather disappointing day albeit played in heatwave conditions and brightened slightly by news from Trent Bridge as Anderson snaffled the last Aussie wicket, reminding this scribe of the equivalent situation from Edgebaston 2005 when fielding for the Grannies against the Ramblers in similarly hot conditions. Plus ca change! But hopefully there will be some change next year.

How to get there
Travelling north on the Woodstock Road in Oxford the turning to the ground is on the left hand side after Frenchay Road and before the turning for Lathbury Road on the right. The ground is hidden behind the houses so the entrance is a small lane between 2 of these houses. If you get to St Edwards School on the Woodstock Road you have gone too far. If you turn the map to a satellite picture you can see the ground to the left of the pointer.
