Result - Leigh

Sun Sep 16th MATCH DRAWN

Match report

A wonderful, near end of season game, played against a mixture of Leigh Saturday League players and a splattering of youth.
The Grannies batted first and lost a wicket to the first ball of the game before recovering from 41-4 to post a respectable 185-7 dec at tea.
Andrew Carr steadied the ship at No.5 with a sprightly 29. His innings was followed by a great partnership from Paritosh Job and Frank Walden who scored 41 and 46 not out respectively in a stand of 72. Pari and Frank knocked the ball to all parts of the ground and provided the Grannies with a total we felt we could defend.
Leigh started resolutely against some tidy bowling from the Grannies. Skipper Ashley Butterworth opened the bowling with spin from one end and pace from the other. Adam Newton (seven wicket spin hero from last year) and Henry Collins bowled with accuracy and guile and never let Leigh get ahead of the run rate. Adam finished with figures of 12-1-44-2 and Henry 12-3-38-2. With Leigh going along nicely at 129-4, but with time against them, the game looked to be heading for a draw.
However, a quick late flurry of wickets gave us some hope and if the Grannies had held onto some of the numerous catches that came our way then the result may well have been different. As it was, Leigh managed to hold on for the draw and finished 168-7. Julian Graham (6-3-17-0)and Toby Gundry (5-0-20-1)bowled beautifully and Frank Walden's late cameo (4-0-25-2)almost swung the game our way.
Thanks to Leigh for their excellent hospitality, to Ashley for captaining the side and to Jerry Wynne for agreeing, at late notice, to play two days cricket on the trot.
