Result - Honourable Artillery Co

Sat Jul 21st Grannies lost by 2 wickets

Match report

For the third year in a row the match was a nail biter and not without controversy.

The Grannies batted first on a pitch and outfield slowed by weeks of rain and the HAC quickly took out three of our top batsmen for not a lot. However rather than collapse in oft told fashion however, from there, John Newton, with 52 and Hugo Llewelyn with 87 made a hundred partnership and brought the Grannies back into the game. The Grannies were all out for 218 which was a respectable score on this pitch leaving HAC 45 overs to get them.

The Grannies started well in the field taking three quick wickets courtesy of Fry and Stringer, but the HAC's middle order rallied and by the time their leading player Houghton, the Army wicketkeeper, was out for 87, they needed 45 off 12 overs with four wickets left. Fry, the pick of the bowlers with 3-40, assisted by Tom Hamilton took a further two wickets and this could have been three, until Fry's slower ball was called as a no ball Beamer by the umpire. Notwithstanding the slow full toss then hit the stumps!

That swung the match and the HAC got home with two overs to spare. The Grannies will look forward to the rematch.
