Match report

This year provided another thriller, resulting in a draw plucked from the jaws of defeat.

The Grannies lost the toss and fielded first. Despite a stellar attack we got off to a loose start and the Gravediggers soon had a hundred or so on the board for the loss of only one wicket. At this point however Martin Stringer got into his swing and produced sterling figures of 5 for 70 to bring us back into the game. He was ably supported by two newcomers Jamie Stark and Louis Massie, both bowling left arm spin, and keeping things tight. Jamie took one caught and bowled chance of which any Grannie would have been proud.

We were set 237 to win off about 42 overs, given 20 overs after 6 15. Paul Knight opening the batting made a gritty 60 on the increasingly slow pitch, but only Hugo Llewelyn with 22 gave any support and a not uncommon Grannies collapse took us from 100 for 4 to 127 for 9 with 7 overs left to play and Bob Percival and third Grannie newcomer of the match John Law batting to see it out.

Fortunately both these characters are well-regarded barristers on the London circuit, known for their determination and attention to detail. Indeed this they put into practice, and barred the Gravediggers, frustrating them increasingly for these seven overs.

As a result it was a great Grannies draw and a good start to their careers for some fine new blood.
